Tourism Solomons has heavily praised Solomon Airlines’ decision to implement its recently inaugurated weekly direct Honiara–Port Moresby service, describing the route as a pivotal step in fast‑tracking Asia-based tourism flow into the Solomon Islands.
Commencing 07 July, the new A-320 service provides a vital travel link for the Solomon Islands, delivering seamless trans‑China connectivity with flight timings connecting directly—both inbound and outbound—with China Southern Airlines services into Port Moresby from its Guangzhou hub.
Describing the move as a “game changer”, Tourism Solomons acting CEO, Dagnal Dereveke said the development marks one of the most strategically important aviation advances the destination has seen in recent years.
While Solomon Airlines currently operates four flights between Port Moresby and Honiara, under a codeshare agreement with Air Niugini, this is the first time the national carrier has had a direct same day pathway connecting the Solomon Islands to one of the world’s fastest‑growing outbound travel markets.
“This new same day route opens significant potential across several high‑value Chinese adventure and lifestyle segments which is where the Solomon Islands holds an edge over rival destinations,” Mr Dereveke said.
“Scuba diving, surfing, trekking and sports fishing are booming in China, especially amongst younger travellers and the Solomon Islands is perfectly positioned to meet that demand.
“This service gives us the access we’ve been waiting for.”
China is already emerging as one of the Solomon Islands’ strongest growth markets. In 2025, visitor arrivals from China surged from 2,134 in 2024 to reach 3,512—an increase of 64.5 percent, the largest rise recorded across all international markets.
Mr Dereveke said the new service will help accelerate that momentum.
“The numbers speak for themselves. Interest from China is rising fast, and this route allows us to convert that interest into real visitation. It strengthens our competitiveness, expands our reach, and supports our long‑term growth targets.”
He added that the partnership between Tourism Solomons and Solomon Airlines continues to play a critical role in rebuilding and expanding international access.

“When our national carrier opens new doors, the entire sector benefits. This service is a major step forward for the Solomon Islands—and we’re ready to maximise every opportunity it brings.”
Guangdong Province’s permanent population stands at approximately 128.6 million making it the most populous province in China.
Adding even more benefit, the provincial capital, Guangzhou, is just 60 minutes away from Hong Kong by high-speed train.
